Synopsis

Taran is an assistant pigkeeper with boyish dreams of becoming a great warrior. However, he has to put the daydreaming aside when his charge, an oracular pig named Hen Wen, is kidnapped by an evil lord known as the Horned King. The villain hopes Hen will show him the way to The Black Cauldron, which has the power to create a giant army of unstoppable soldiers.

I used to adore this film back when I was a kid. It used to spook me out, so much so that every time it would come out on TV, I was in a great "dilemma" rather watch it or not because there was the chance that it would give me nightmares. In the end, I would always end up watching it. So this is one of Disney's first - if not the first - wide aspect ratio film, and it looks pretty good. You can tell that despite being considered one of Disney's biggest flops, the studio did put a lot of effort into this, at least animation-wise. And I'm not talking about the hand-drawings - you can notice the dark sketchy outlines all over -, no, I'm talking about the overall vibe the images convey. The film is so atmospheric. It radiates this all-consuming, powerful dark flare that's equally seductive and frightening (age-depending, of course). It's very 'The Lord of the Rings' friendy at that. But unfortunately, that's only in parts. The film fails to maintain a continuous hold on that magical vibration upon which 'The Lord of the Rings' rules. Even though this was a beautiful nostalgic watch, it didn't hold up to what I thought it would be, relying on those enthralling childhood memories. And yet, it's not as bad as people make it be. It's not bad at all. 'The Black Cauldron' is a divergence from Disney's usual G-rated musicals, and that didn't help at all in the way viewers would take it, but the film deserves better than the shambolic audience who gazed upon it.
