Synopsis

Isolated bell-ringer Quasimodo wishes to leave Notre Dame tower against the wishes of Judge Claude Frollo, his stern guardian and Paris' strait-laced Minister of Justice. His first venture to the outside world finds him Esmeralda, a kind-hearted and fearless Romani woman who openly stands up to Frollo's tyranny.

"Beata Maria" I'm so mad about this one. 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' is Disney's most ambivalent film. It feels like the filmmakers wanted the movie to be dark and gritty, and on the other hand, the studio didn't want to miss their target audience; the kids. And what came out in the mids of that was an unsettled take of what could have been such a unique presentation of Hugo's novel. This story can be adapted for a G audience and also be a great movie. I'm sure there must be a formula for that. But it isn't what the filmmakers here threw together. The change of tone throughout the entire running time is unbearably annoying. There are constant shifts from dark and intense, lustful moments to naive and childish-like turns. I don't know how this film got away with a G rating. The 'Hellfire' scene alone should have automatically earned this a PG. I'm not sure if little kids would be able to understand what the sexually aroused Frollo was telling to the fireplace. But who knows? The kids are brisker nowadays. Anyways, they nailed that moment, using the song to elevate and embrace Frollo's persona and his obsession with Esmeralda excellently. And that scene's brilliancy is the reason why I am a bit frustrated about this film. You see, I wouldn't mind if they made a bad film. They release tons of bad movies every year. I've made peace with that. But the fact that the 'Hellfire' scene is such amazing shows that they had what it takes to create something exceptional. Too bad they didn't have the tenacity to go full-ballsy throughout.
