Synopsis

Two small children and a ship's cook survive a shipwreck and find safety on an idyllic tropical island. Soon, however, the cook dies and the young boy and girl are left on their own. Days become years and Emmeline and Richard make a home for themselves surrounded by exotic creatures and nature's beauty. But will they ever see civilization again?

Okay so let’s start off with the good stuff. The setting was gorgeous and the coming of age topics are relatable for kids/teens. I don’t think the actors did a bad job, but thats about as good as it gets. During the entirety of the film every underaged actor is naked for most of their screen time. While you can argue that it’s “tasteful” for the very young characters who don’t have ‘developed’ bodies, having a 14 year old and 18 year old fully nude for most of the movie was super gross. There are some really suggestive scenes in the later half of the movie that left me super confused about who this movie was meant for?? The story line and character challenges are very much ones that would resonate with a preteen/teenage, but with the sexual implications it seems inappropriate for that age range to be watching this. And if the intended audience is adults who actively want to watch kids and teenagers naked then that’s a whole mother problem entirely. I’m torn on what to rate this because I think if I was a middle schooler when I first watched this I would have loved it, but as an adult I was left with a sick feeling in my stomach for a good portion of the film. I get this was made in 1980, but even for that time is crazy to me that so many adults where in the production of this and didn’t think to just cast young looking ADULTS.
