The last man on earth recounts his life story to his grandson, who could be the first person to return from humanity’s exile in outer space. This art film in the guise of an oddball sci-fi exercise, with its scale-model sets populated by “human puppets,” takes the form of an introspective philosophical journey about our species. Moving, heart-rending and nerve-wracking, Zeria is an insanely ambitious film that will leave no one unscathed. A future-time exploration of private lives, a cross between Lynch’s Eraserhead and Malick’s Tree of Life where monsters mingle with the divine.
