The battle scenes, intrigues, and characters were all right, but the brief narrative of the history of the great Napoleon was not fully satisfactory in this respect.

RS, which is nevertheless one of my favorite films, completely misses the subject (political Europe at the beginning of the 19th century) and the character. He reduces Napoleon's life to fairly vulgar and least interesting aspects.

Napoleon is a grand film, both in terms of Scott creating a story with a size we've rarely seen from him, and the bold, large choices made by a completely game Phoenix. The Phoenix is the key to it all: a performance as robust as the glass of burgundy he knocks back: preening, brooding, seething and conquering.
