The characters feel like a believable family, with no self-conscious attempts at grandstanding. Marceau's portrayal of a daughter struggling with her father's right to die is nuanced and realistic, while Dussollier's performance is both tender and frustrating.
The film also highlights the importance of simple moments, like Schygulla's story about a red dress, and how they can bring unexpected emotional weight.
