The Phantom of the Open is based on the life of perpetual golfing imposter Maurice Flitcroft. I enjoyed this story of a man who wants to enter Britain’s prestigious Open Championship even though he has barely practiced the sport and never finished a whole round. There are inherent problems with the idea that what Flitcroft did was noble, but aside from the ethical part of it, the movie has much to offer. Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins offer wonderful performances. Director Craig Roberts drives the story forward with ease - no small feat considering the many years over which these events took place. Flitcroft’s sons, played by Jonah Lee, Christian Lee and Jake Davies round out the movie with impressive supporting roles.
The Phantom of the Open is a small but welcome film and is sure to entertain.
