A vibrantly fun and frantic neon-soaked throwback slasher, dripping in enough mid-90’s sensory abuse to make me rage at not being a teen in that decade. A high energy slasher that would make Craven smile from the grave.
Think Goosebumps on acid; The Stranger Thing-esque approach rings true to R.L. Stine’s signature narrative approach, one that works ludicrously with it’s modern violent spin. It’s an amalgamation of the likes of Scream, Friday The 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween but with it’s own fresh point of view, it’s own unique kills and a likeable bunch of expendable teens to boot.
While it’s success isn’t consistent due to being bogged down by future film story set-up, it’s the slasher elements with a twist that works wonders in Fear Street’s favour. It’s safe to say I can’t wait for Part Two: 1978, and even 1666 for that matter.
