Joder! A wonder movie!
I can't believe I hadn't heard about this film earlier than a day ago. 'Blancanieves' is a rare film because it displays the real power of cinema so effortlessly; it shows how powerless the stories are when we meet them in the film realm. On paper, the odd spin Berger puts on the famous Snow White tale sounds like a parody. Laughable! - A doomed project from the get-go. Though, the film works so well when you watch it. It works because Berger understands filmmaking. He knows what makes a great film, and he navigates through this bizarre endeavor with the confidence of the greatest of toreadors, and in the end, manages to gouge out of it all a hyper-stylized, espectacular film.
I loved every aspect of this film. From the gorgeous, often symbolic settings and overall visuals to the carefully composed score and the amazing 'No Te Puedo Encontrar' song, 'Blancanieves' makes for a true cinematic jewel. Now, I think they could've done without some of the intertitles they showed throughout the film because the images cover those plot points compellingly. Furthermore, the actors didn't push themself much here, but again, those don't take away much from the movie. Berger's Spanish version of Snow White is unusual, much so for how close Berger stays to the Spanish culture - loved the flamenco clapping sounds and the "Olé" shoutings -, yet, the film is a more than a competent interpretation of the mythical story. Thoroughly enjoyable!
