It is not easy to understand this film. If you understand it though, you can't help but call it a masterpiece, in all its ambiguity and disgust, in a way. It's disturbing, but it couldn't have been otherwise. A real eulogy to madness, to also recall Erasmus of Rotterdam. One of my all time favorite movies, if not the quintessential favorite.

It's an incredibly unique psychological horror that's so weird, creepy, and mind-boggling that I was completely shocked to see its unexpected ending, and its proportionate aspect - that makes the film feel oppressive.
The film's black and white, simplistic style is pleasing to watch and it's also extremely effective, shot beautifully. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson deliver incredibly committed and engaging performances.

A film very focused on the performances and the actors delivered everything. The only problem for me is that the movie takes itself too seriously. The aesthetic is visibly influenced by German expressionism, an edition reminiscent of classic Russian cinema. Anyway, a lot of reference to the European "art cinema". The photography is impeccable.

Like nothing you have seen before. Weird, but the good kind of weird.
