Cinderella 79
Colors and Art
Right off the bat I loved the bright/vibrant but not two in your face colors. It was very whimsical and beautiful and had a very European vibe. I loved the patterns in the background and on the decor and walls. Even the details like the scuffs on the walls or the secret mouse holes. The fairy godmother’s sparkles, and the glowing bright carriage just added to the whimsical feeling of this movie. The dress transformation was phenomenal. The painted scenes are absolutely beautiful.
Music
I love the music. It was also very whimsical. I think Nightingale was my favorite not because it had extensive complicated lyrics but because it was just so beautifully sung but every song in this movie was so beautiful and I wanted to sing along to all of them. Another one of my favorite songs was the dressmaking song when the mice are also sewing her new dress. It was bubbly and cute and little funny. Everything Disney songs should be. I love the orchestra and how it always matched the vibes of each scene like when she’s escaping the ball it’s very panicked music or when she’s sad it’s very melodramatic and very emotional. For instance, the scene in the garden where she’s upset because they just tore her dress to shreds broke me because of the music that was playing mixed with the absolute distraught of the scene. I also enjoyed the narrator’s voice at the beginning. His voice is very calming and added an element of charm to the beginning of the movie.
Animal companions
I cannot even express how much I loved the animals in this movie. If I tried to explain every single scene, we would be here all day. I love how expressive they were how much detail was put into what they did. A few examples are like in the beginning when they’re doing the morning routine one of the mice get his tail tangled up and he’s untangling it with a sleepy expression, or any jacking loose for interaction ever, or when Bruno is in the kitchen dreaming of chasing a Lucifer. And I loved how he got reprimanded by Cinderella and then she tried to take up for Lucifer just to be nice and then couldn’t think of anything nice to say. Then just to be salty and sassy Lucifer framed Bruno for attacking him. He is such a basic cat. The animals were my favorite element of this movie. Especially Jack and Gus’s dynamic I absolutely love them. They’re so goofy but also kind to each other and I thought the scene where they were literally cuddling was just so cute. Jack is my favorite though and I do think he is the smartest mouse in the house. He looks out for everyone, he’s a leader most of the time, he’s one of the most brave, and I do think he cares about Cinderella the most. I have a hunch that he was one of the first mice to be with Cinderella. He does have a bit of a temper sometimes because there are multiple times where people have to hold him back but I love that because it gives him more character. Gus is cute and sweet, but he’s kind of dumb and very much loudmouth. Also, he will put food ahead of his friends. He also needs to do a little cardio because he runs out of breath way too fast but despite that he’s very determined and always a good friend (unless there’s food involved). I loved how the little female mouse, which I’m pretty sure is Jack’s girlfriend, had the idea to make Cinderella her own dress. She really took charge and I loved that there was a female character who was confident and took charge like that. She definitely seems like the mother role (not literally) of the mice or at least the most responsible. The dress making scene was so bubbly and just spectacular and the scene where Lucifer sits on the beads so they can’t get them is such a sassy cat thing to do. I loved the cat Lucifer war at the end and I loved how the birds helped Bruno get in the house to scare us for a way. He finally got to chase the cat. I was so excited for him. I also loved how the animals don’t instantly trust Cinderella, she earns it by being kind and giving them clothes. Also, on a separate note of those chickens are mean as hell.
Story and Representation
I loved how the first part of the movie is her going through her routine so you can see what she’s used to however, work she is and how she’s treated. The attention to detail in this movie is amazing but there’s not as much symbolic representation (unless you count the ironic comedy like turning a horse into a coach man and things like that) in this movie but it is still so beautiful and it gives you so many other things to pay attention to.
Characters
I found the background characters, very quirky and bubbly. They were very vibrant and differing in character. For instance, The sisters are so salty/jealous. They had super annoying voices (mostly Griselda). They were Greedy, obnoxious, Delusional, and Spoiled. They literally tore up cinderella‘s dress just so she couldn’t go. They’re also clumsy, awkward, lazy, and nosy. They were definitely your typical mean girl vibes. The step mother is just straight up cruel but kinda classy. She treats Cinderella like a slave, has a Short temper, and Conniving. She’s setting up Cinderella for failure. She’s very clever and observant and very intelligent. I can tell where her daughters got their glory hog tendencies from. The fairy godmother didn’t explain herself much but Cinderella knew who she was? I couldn’t tell. Are fairy godmother mothers common? It wasn’t too clear. She’s kind of an airhead but very bubbly. I liked the rhyming songs and phrases. She was all right, but she didn’t stand out too much in my mind. I fucking love the king. He’s funny and so caring. He’s a Scheming Mf, kinda Violent too.. he literally tried to kill his advisor when the ball went wrong lmao. He gives his son a babysitter to make sure he asks Cinderella to marry him which is some hilarious over beating parent stuff. He legit has dreams about grandchildren. He’s bipolar as all hell. I feel like he didn’t care who the prince married as long as he got grandkids lmao. He’s very determined and has a one track mind. Maybe he wasn’t the greenest flag but I still adored him. The prince looked so bored at the ball and is sarcastic af. Not the eye roll at the step sisters. I loved how he instantly connected with Cinderella and chased down his woman 🫰. He would’ve definitely been able to tell who Cinderella was. The kings advisor sets himself up for failure and is pompous. Also he tried to trap Cinderella… tho his life was on the line so I ca give him a pass. He’s kind of a coward. He does have a conscience but his survival instincts are stronger. He doesn’t really like to put up with BS unless it’s from the king obviously. He did end up taking up for Cinderella so he won some points back for that.
Main character
Cinderella herself has realistically positive reactions. She’s kind but doesn’t waste kind words for people who don’t deserve it. She knows her worth, she’s beautiful, and has a whimsical voice. I love her sense of human. She takes no time for nonsense. Loved how she tried to be cheery but is realistically disappointed/devastated when it’s called for. Like how she almost gives up hope as anyone would when she’s locked away in the tower. She has lots of common sense. Despite the unfairness, she also follows the rules to a T and takes accountability. She’s Thankful/appreciative and kind like a real princess should be. Not her saying “fuck y’all” when she found out they were coming with her slipper and went up to her room to get ready. She’s also in her head a lot, which I think is accurate for someone who is being sheltered, and who has to talk to herself/animals a lot.
Conclusion
All in all, I loved her as a person and as a Disney princess. She’s kind and sweet and responsible and whimsical. The morals in the story were clear cut and easy to understand (1- never give up on your dreams and work hard and they’ll come true. 2- it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside when two people love each other that’s all that matters. 3- it is not your expensive nice clothes that make you an great/loved person. It’s what’s on the inside). It was a great movie and I would definitely watch it again.
