Beauty and the beast 85
Intro
I am in love with the intro to Beauty and the beast. The music is absolutely magical and romantic. The narrating voice sounds so hypnotizing in a way. It was perfect. I love how they went over the history of the story before actually focusing on the princess so you kinda know what’s going on. They’re not too specific on exact years but that’s alright because it was still beautifully done and was easy to absorb.
Art/Music
The art and music in Beauty and the beast was so Romantic and bold. Not whimsical and elegant like most of the princesses movies I have rated so far. It’s a nice contrast to your average Disney princess style. It’s all very soft gothic at first in the castle, which was most likely representation of the curse. I love the colors they use to support the vibes of each scene. For example how the town was very lively colors but nothing too out there. Then you had the beasts castle after the curse lifted, bright and elegant with golds and vibrant colors. There’s the same color representation with belle’s attire too. She starts in a basic light blue dress that was similar to everyone else but after she starts to accept the beast and be herself the more she starts to wears brighter more exotic/bolder colors instead. I also loved the details to things like Belle’s house, all the inventions built around it, or how all the mirrors and portraits of the prince are destroyed because the beast hates himself. My favorite scene is probably their dance. The atmosphere was beautiful, the dress was stunning, the ballroom was to die for! I loved how they animated the movement and the flow was phenomenal. I loved how you could see their reflection in the floor, everything was so shiny. The stars outside the window just added another level of magic. It was so elegant and beautiful! The art in this movie was jaw dropping and one of the best in any Disney princess movies.
The music is beautiful. I love how almost every scene in the movie has at least atmospheric music in the background. It definitely helped set the tone of each scene and made it more emotional. Every song in this movie was spectacular. Beauty and the beast is one of my favorite Disney princess sound tracks, second only to Tangled.
Characters
The towns people are honestly kinda judgy and stupid. I think one of the only reasons anyone hates her is 1) because she’s smarter or better looking than them (they’re jealous) 2) because she doesn’t conform to their social system 3) because she doesn’t take any BS and will call you out if you’re wrong, she’s very out spoken. They definitely give this movie a medieval vibe culturally which is great since it’s accurate, but I absolutely hate the towns people. They’re unintellectual sheep who get no redemption in this movie.
I am 100% counting the librarian in the town separate from the townspeople. I loved him. He was an adorable kind old man. He didn’t have much screen time but you got so much in that one scene. For instance, Belle has read every book in his library yet the town hates that she reads because she’s a woman. This means he doesn’t share those views and is happy that Belle is interested in learning. He also let her have her favorite book since he didn’t have anything new. The vibe of their interaction was so wholesome as if they were best friends which I loved because I hate the fact that most friends in movies are the same age. I love seeing different generations have friendships together.
LeFou was hilarious. I love how even while doing everything Gaston says, he takes his own shots at Gaston sometimes. It was almost as if he was trying to make Gaston mad even though he probably knew he’d get hit for it? It was very funny. As I said before I totally think they had a thing for each other. Definitely more so coming from LeFou. He had no reason to stick around someone who was constantly abusing him and he felt comfortable enough to agitate Gaston despite consequences. He also cared enough to try to lighten Gaston’s mood by bragging about everything that’s great about him so he’d stop thinking of belle. He’s a great character all in all and I loved the humor he brought to the movie.
Belle’s Father, Maurice, is a goofy old man. Supposedly he’s a genius but he does a lot of dumb stuff in this movie. While he may be tech savvy, he not too witty unlike Belle. For instance when he left to the fair to show off his invention the horse tried to tell him where to go and he didn’t listen to it. It even acted scared to go down the other path and Maurice didn’t listen. Then when they inevitably got lost he blamed the horse. Poor guy probably won’t like animals after that night because right after he got chased by wolves. I think he was definitely the first man to invent a non animal form of transportation. Despite his short comings in mental capacity I absolutely love him as a father and person. He has a good heart and raised a strong independent daughter who he supports no matter what. He didn’t even ask questions when Belle told him the beast was good. He believed her right away. They are so cute.
The cursed staff are my favorite side characters. Especially Lumière. Lumière is charming, socially savvy, very spontaneous, bold, and very sneaky. He does whatever he wants despite there being rules yet still obeys major rules for instance when Belle wanted to go to the west tower but that could’ve been self preservation because he wanted to be human again and was afraid that her knowing about the curse would mess up their plans somehow. I say that because it’s the only time that he actually followed a rule in the entire movie. Cogsworth was irritating. He took credit for things that he didn’t do, was negative the whole time, followed orders even though it meant being cruel, treated Belle like she was stupid (though I think all the male characters did that to her besides the beast… even Lumière 😭), and was very bossy even though no one ever listened to him. They seem to use to/done with it lol. Mrs. Pots was my second favorite beside Chip. They were so adorable and sweet. I thought it was cute how Chip didn’t understand when they talked about love/seeing the change in Belle and Prince Adam. It was very accurate and a funny joke to add in. In the live action there was a Mr. Pots but in this I swear to everything they were shipping her with Maurice because they were standing together at the ball in the end and looked so cute together (I ship it 😂). I loved the other cursed staff as well, they all had personality (if they had lines) and made this movie feel more magical. I love how they kind of embrace the item they are and have talents that support it.
Monsieur D’Arque, the mental hospital guy, was terrifying. I remember him being so creepy and eerie as a kid and that hasn’t changed as an adult. There’s definitely something evil about him. Honestly o have a theory that he is some kind of demon that feeds off negativity because he kind of just disappeared after Belle proved the beast was real. In the moments he was there it was creepy.
I also want to count the magical lady as a character because… bro wtf. Okay I get that the beast was a bad guy and all but… 1) you come to his castle in the middle of the night looking old and creepy with some weird rose asking to stay the night… I wouldn’t let you in either. He’s a king… who people probably want to assassinate. Can we also acknowledge that the beast was 11 when she did this? Bro cursed a minor for being childish. She knew he’d say no. Then again he was raised to be selfish by his father who abandoned him and his mother died so… maybe it was a mercy curse to help him find love lol. 2) why would you make everyone forget about them if you want him to find love? Clearly no one remembered anything about the castle or the curse and it couldn’t have been that long honestly. A few years maybe. How he gonna find love if no one knows about him? Belle was clearly the first girl to ever go there. 3) Is it normal for you to go after crappy people? Why not Gaston? Why only royalty? It makes me think she was some kind of fairy god mother. Maybe she was Belle’s fairy godmother (which would makes sense if you think about the scene where Belle literally wishes for a better more adventurous life then blows some dandelion seeds into the wind which is also known for being a wishing flower) the whole time and set this up from the beginning because the beast and Belle are close to the same age. Belle is 4 years younger than him so she was seven when he was cursed. This could’ve all been the fairy god mother’s plan to make sure Belle and the Beast ended up together like a prophecy or something.
Animal Sidekick
There wasn’t much of an anima sidekick presence except when the horse found Belle, brought her to her dad, tried to help her escape, and will say stuck around for her despite clearly being scared of the beast. They definitely didn’t give this horse enough screen time but can we acknowledge that even after getting attacked by wolves twice and being scared by the beast twice it stuck to Belle. Extra points for that. It’s not his fault the writers don’t think he was important.
Villain
Gaston is… something. Honestly I’m not going to lie I picked up on things watching this as an adult that I didn’t as a kid. For one, he’s always violent and abusive towards men but not towards women and you can’t even say that it’s because it’s a kids movie because the beast almost hits belle a lot of times and even violently grabs her at least twice. Gaston actually never touches a woman at all in this movie. Woman touch him but he never ever touches a woman. Not to profile him but when I was watching I got the vibe is a closeted in denial gay man with a lot of toxic masculinity. He is always putting his hands all over LeFou but never the women. LeFou and him even dance and plus when they did the Gaston song, Gaston did a pose in his chair that just gave “I’m fabulous” vibes. I also don’t get why he wants to get belle so much when every woman in town wants him. There’s plenty of beautiful woman and he goes after the one that doesn’t want him? I don’t get it. He could’ve just made the town resent her and get with another girl. I think that ties into his hunting fascination he has. He so weirdly obsessed with hunting. Which is kinda terrifying if you consider that in the real world… he likes killing things. Honestly I don’t even think that he cared about belle when he went after the Beast at first. I think he just saw a chance to hunt a monster. Though it probably did hurt his pride a little that belle talked so nice of the beast while rejecting him. As the villain of the story, I think he was very easy to hate. The right amounts of violent, aggravating, and pompous.
Prince
The beast, aka Prince Adam, was very selfish, angry, violent, prideful, and self deprecating. He definitely had some self hate issues (hence why every mirror and portrait was destroyed). He clearly thought no one could love a beast. It did say he was a very vain person (despite him being 11 when he was cursed so like how was he suppose to grow up and learn that was wrong?). It makes me think… where were/are his parents? Well, I looked it up and apparently his mother died of illness and his father encouraged his selfish vain behavior. It doesn’t say if the father died but he in one way or another left his son to rule alone… at 11. Years maybe the curse was a mercy curse. Anyway, I loved the beast and you could definitely tell he was a little childish. He’s very different than your average Disney prince. Especially his human form which is more muscular and almost romantic looking than the normal refined elegant princes. I loved how he evolved and as he did he would act more human. To be fair he has been a beast since he was 11 and is now 21. Ten years of being an animal… he has an excuse. Towards the end he’s more gentle, loving, merciful, and controls his temper (unless you be trying to take Belle from him 😂). The only thing I think was lacking from this prince that I would’ve loved to see was more of what he likes or his personality when he started to be kinder. A few facts about himself or his hobbies or childhood memories or something. Anything about himself at all. I’m not saying you don’t see his personality at all but it’s very subtle.
Princess
Belle is bold, clever, intelligent both mentally/emotionally, adventurous, and follows her heart but also her instincts. Belle doesn’t take BS, she would definitely call you out on it. She doesn’t reform despite not fitting in. She wants a place to be herself and someone to understand her which is understandable. Belle doesn’t belittle people for not being as smart. She’s kind and gentle even though they’re not all that nice to her. She’s so enthusiastic about her books and adventure. She talks about it to people who aren’t even listening like she didn’t with the baker. Belle Linda gets lost in her own world and yet is hyper aware of her surroundings at the same time. It’s clear she’s very use to this town but it doesn’t seem like she grew up there so they definitely moved from somewhere. The backstory is that they ran from the plague. They probably lived in a bigger city and her father wanted a cleaner more sanitary and quiet safe place for Belle, though she clearly didn’t enjoy that kind of life very much. She never blamed him however. She adores her father and supports him 100%. She seems to have picked up her father’s knack for tools as well or at least the names of them because he asked for the weirdest tool and she instantly picked it up. They probably worked on things together a lot. Belle is also selfless. She instantly took her father’s place trying to save him despite being scared to death of the beast. You could tell she didn’t want to. She couldn’t even look at the beast at first. Even though she was scared, she didn’t let the beast push her around either. He probably wasn’t use to being talked back to so I bet it came as a shock to him. Belle is brave, she got over her fear pretty quickly because she left her room and didn’t seem to be panicked. Instead she seemed very curious. Part of me thinks that another reason she agreed to stay was curiosity. She doesn’t seem to listen to anyone or any rules either. As soon as she had the chance she tried going to the west wing despite being afraid of the beast. I honestly believe no princess is as curious as her (only rivaled by Pocahontas). Belle is very responsible too. When the beast saved her she could’ve escaped but instead she saved him and when she felt responsible for the angry mob (because she kinda was) she rushed there to save him despite it being dangerous. She owns up to her mistakes which is super refreshing. It’s nice to see princesses make mistakes too because after all we’re all human. I also really love the fact that after the beast chilled out that she could see the man behind the beast. Instead of judging him for that he couldn’t do (like when he tried using a spoon and couldn’t bc his claws) she’d help him find a way to make it easier (like when she picked her bowl and and drank it from the bowl, something they could both do). Another great example is helping him feed the birds. That was so cute and wholesome! I also love how Belle wasn’t afraid to totally wreck the Beast in their snowball fight. She didn’t give him a chance. 100% she gives me a competitive vibe. Belle was so refreshing and unique and bold. I absolutely love her and she use to be my favorite (and his now my second favorite behind Rapunzel) Disney princess.
Moral(s)
I think the main moral of this story was clear from the beginning. That beautiful is within and being a good person is what makes you beautiful and loved. The prince turned down a needy old woman and became what he was inside, a beast. Then he opened his heart to love and became what Belle made him, Human.
Another moral I got from this story that wasn’t really the main point was that it doesn’t matter how other people see you or feel about who you are, if you stay true to yourself and who you are then nothing can stand on your way. You’ll be way happier being yourself.
Another moral I kind of got from the story was that good deeds bring good fortune and bad deeds bring karma. LeFou survived by fleeing the castle (he was always being abused by Gaston) as did all the mislead villagers while Gaston fell off the castle after committing his greatest act of evil (I’m not convinced he died because there was a river below).
Symbolism
I think there was a great deal of symbolism in this movie but it was very subtle. First of all the roses, which stand for beauty, were everywhere because that’s what the prince valued most in the world was Beaty. He was very vain. Then the witch (who basically tricked him… at 11) offered him a beautiful rose in return for a room for the night (which I would’ve also turned down because this is a stranger) and the pence turned it down because he didn’t understand true beauty which is love. Which is also what a rose represents, love. So the prince rejected true beauty, aka the rose, and got pricked by the thorns, aka the curse.
You also see this inner beauty representation when the ugly old lady turns into a beautiful witch? Fairy? Whatever she is.
Another symbolism I liked was the color of Belle’s dresses. Her dress choice and colors slowly get more bold and bright as she gets more comfortable being herself until she’s in a literally gold and yellow glittering gown. Yellow represents happiness, optimism, and intellect. Gold represents wealth, power, prosperity, and high status, while also symbolizing purity, divinity, and immortality across various cultures because it does not tarnish.
There’s also the castle with its gothic vibes, all the gargoyles and demon decor around the castle. Signifying that the place is cursed with darkness (which I think is messed up considering the witch cursed a child at 11 so basically forced him to grow up in this eerie depressing place. Could’ve at least left the beautiful castle alone). Then when the curse is broken it becomes beautiful and bright again. Colorful even.
I’m not gonna lie I also feel like the rose was wilting with the Beasts hope. The more he stoped believing the more it wilted. It seemed to be losing its petals a lot faster after Belle left when he was depressed. I don’t think they knew exactly how the Rose was timed. It’s been ten years so they had to be falling pretty slowly at first.
Story
All in all the story was amazing. It was very entertaining and easy to follow. The point came across nicely and it didn’t seem to drag on, it was very fluid and nicely paced. I loved the characters and the morals and the few but very hilarious adult jokes hidden in there (there were quite a few). It’s a movie/story for all ages to enjoy. Very colorful and fun. I do use to say that I wish we saw some of the cursed staff be reunited with the people who forgot them but it still ended beautifully. I absolutely love this movie.
