Life’s a journey. As much as not all of us cross the ocean on a small boat with a tiger every day, I think most of us had at least one moment in our lives where we just wanted to look up and shout “why?!”
Why suffer? Why bother? And why God, really, do you let all this happen?
Pi wasn’t the same young boy after he found himself alone in the middle of nowhere. And so does our suffering changes us. As we move on with our lives; we lose things we care, we lose people we love. But we move on. Then nothing’s simple; there are all these little inconveniences and sometimes everything comes one after another. But we move on. There are storms that destroy our only hopes, choke us under water. But the sun eventually shines.
Seeing the unfortunate this way makes life bearable, at least for me.
One of the most impressive scenes for me was the joy of Pi when he was under the storm. First on the ship, then on that little boat. He somehow saw the god among those clouds and thunders. He somehow believed his suffering wasn’t for vain.
Then when he arrived on the floating, carnivorous island; he thought after all the waves he fought, he thought he had finally found peace and he could settle and die there. But however comfy it looked, he realized what accepting failure could take from him. There’s a saying “a ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not why ships are built for”. And so he left, and started hoping again.
At the end he actually did it. What are the odds? But I’ll say what are the odds of our existence anyways? Why not believe in the story with the tiger in a world that can hold so many wonders?
This was an incredible, impressive movie. With the flashbacks and narrative, the story just flowed like water. It made me once again see that life can actually be a better place with its storms after all. So, as the booklet says,
“Above all, never lose hope.”
