Нортапу приходится пройти через все испытания рабства, сменить не одного хозяина и обрести законную свободу лишь после двенадцати лет тяжелого труда и издевательств. В фильме присутствует множество жестоких сцен, которые показывают зрителю все тяготы с которыми сталкивались афроамериканцы в этот тёмный период истории.

The film "12 Years a Slave" is one of the large-scale works of Steve McQueen. The plot is based on the true story of the illegally captured African American Solomon Northup.
Northup has to go through all the trials of slavery, change more than one owner and gain legal freedom only after twelve years of hard work and bullying. The film contains many violent scenes that show the viewer all the hardships that African Americans faced during this dark period of history.
