Infelicità, delicata intimità, quasi sensuale, e disperata ricerca d'aiuto sono le corde principali che vengono toccate in questo film e che tornano continuamente durante l'intera visione: ricercare il perduto o ciò che non si ha mai avuto, mettere alla prova dinanzi a momenti cruciali che, per quanto cruciali possano essere, mai riusciranno a smuovere la coscienza umana. Quest'ultima si trova a giudizio e, nonostante questo, non si riguarda. Anche nella lontanissima ipotesi in cui si tenta il cambiamento (la sorella maggiore, Karin) non si ha altro che un pugno in faccia che sa di delusione mista ad amara illusione di un qualcosa che era semplice menzogna. 
“Sono tutte bugie. È solo un insieme di bugie, tutta la vita”.

Unhappiness, delicate intimacy, almost sensual, and a desperate search for help are the main chords that are touched in this film and that return continuously throughout the entire vision: searching for what is lost or what one has never had, putting to the test before to crucial moments which, however crucial they may be, will never be able to move the human conscience. The latter is in judgment and, despite this, does not concern itself. Even in the very distant hypothesis in which change is attempted (the older sister, Karin) one has nothing but a punch in the face that smacks of disappointment mixed with the bitter illusion of something that was a simple lie.

As Agnes slowly dies of cancer, her sisters are so deeply immersed in their own psychic pains that they can't offer her the support she needs. Maria is wracked with guilt at her husband's suicide, caused by his discovery of her extramarital affair. The self-loathing, suicidal Karin seems to regard her sister with revulsion. Only Anna, the deeply religious maid who lost her young child, seems able to offer Agnes solace and empathy.
