It's been quite a while now since the last time I had a hard time getting to talk about a movie without wanting to wipe the floor trash-talking about it. It feels like McKay thought that just because he's tackling such a relevant topic, add to that a stellar cast, he'd have guaranteed success with this movie. But, of course, the subject is irrelevant when judging art, and despite its sensitive plot and star-bathed cast, 'Don't Look Up' makes for one of the most boring, naive, and self-indulgent films of the year.
So, the film is a social commentary in the form of satire. And like all great satires, the channel to a compelling product is a sharp and witty script, and that is what McKay strived for and failed miserably here. The dialogue is so on the nose, and by that, I mean character saying: "Are we really about to tell the president of US that we have just over six months until humankind, basically every species, it's completely extinct?" It's ridiculous, but not in the way McKay was hoping for it to be. I can't believe he let such a line find its way into the script. But what do I know? He must have thought: "This is ingenious! Now, I only need the greatest actors in the business to transmit it as better as possible, and I know exactly how to get them. I'll offer the highest salary to DiCaprio, so he'll feel like "the man" among the rest of the cast. And Lawrence will happily put aside her feminist ideologies and won't say jack shit about it because she can't say no to the chance of finally making out with Timmy (twice). And after I allure Streep by offering her the presidency, everyone else will join if only to be around these three." Jokes aside, with its threatening star-power, this movie had no right to be the soul-destroying experience it was for me.
