This film came as a surprise as I was expecting to watch this later this year, anyway, I'm not complaining. Intriguing take! Maybe it's too early to judge it right now, but I think 'The Power of the Dog' is one of those films that the more you sleep on it, the more you appreciate and like it. And that, of course, is an indicator of great cinema. It's a challenging film, and I love it for that. I liked how Jane succeeded in keeping a constant sense of unease and intrigue throughout. Because when you think of this movie after watching it, you realize that it revolves around a thin story. But there are so many details here that Jane managed to captured so well and richly and on which you can stay and interpret for hours. That's what this film does, it stays with you, and it stimulates you to think about it.
Jane is a champion! 'The Power of the Dog' is such a heavy director-driven film. Campion, in grand fashion, creates a strong sense of her presence in everything we see here while at the same time pays homage to classics like 'The Searchers' with some of the shots. And I can also sniffle a bit 'There Will Be Blood' in aspects like production design and character presentation. Talking about 'There Will Be Blood,' although Cumberbatch falls a bit short in being for this film what Day-Lewis became for PTA's masterpiece, he still, similar to Daniel, delivers an all-consuming performance. The rest of the cast do well in their given roles, but they never threaten to take Cumberbatch's shine away. Another aspect I liked a lot here was the score. The score plays as the perfect generator in boosting the feel of intrigue and suspicion, and it eases the experience of going through the sluggish pace. Visually, this film is gorgeous. From the first opening shots, the movie is rich in visual symbolism, and as I already mentioned, it also takes the courtesy of referring to some of the old goldies of the western genre. 'The Power of the Dog' is a well-studied psychological drama crafted with attention and delicacy and cements Jane Campion as one the best women directors ever.
